Combine skiing and cruising in Norway with Hurtigruten

Many cruise lines are forever searching for ways in which to appeal to a younger market, often crafting ships with modern amenities and amending itineraries to feature ports that are more likely to catch the eye of a millennial holiday-maker. However, adventure-based like, Hurtigruten, has discovered that the answer may have been right under their nose the whole time – in the form of extreme sports.

Ski Hike

The line is known for offering ‘the world’s most beautiful voyage’, which is a magnificent journey along the Norwegian coast that offers opportunities to see the breath-taking scenery of the fjords. Now, the line is looking to redefine this by offering the brand new ‘Arctic Ski & Sail’ itinerary, where passengers will be able to enjoy three days of skiing along with three days of cruising.

Norway attracts skier from around the world all-year-round, but it’s really saying something that the destinations visited on this itinerary are largely unknown to the usual crowds. Based within the Arctic Circle, you will hike to summits located in Senja, Lyngen and Kvaløya – each of which offers perfect powder-snow conditions. Best of all, you will get to visit each of these destinations in April, during which time the sun offers longer days and rising temperatures are you ski from the summit towards the sea.

This incredible expedition roundtrip cruise departs out of Tromsø aboard the classic MS Nordstjernen, which was built specifically for Arctic sailing in 1956 and later modernised in 2000. The ship offers comfortable cabins, while ‘Norway’s Coastal Kitchen’ ensures you are able to enjoy meals that comprise entirely of local produce – particularly taking advantage of the abundance of fresh fish. Upon arrival at each destination, you will be able to board a tender boat, which will take you directly from the ship to the foot of the mountain.

You don’t even have to be a professional skier, with all certified guides ensuring that you enjoy a truly exhilarating experience. Each passenger is placed into a group of six, which enables Hurtigruten to offer personalised service based on all levels of expertise. Waking up to a new destination each day, a typical itinerary will consist of breakfast and make up a lunch before preparing ski equipment and departing via tender shortly after. You will return to the ship for 4pm and enjoy a hearty evening meal at around seven before briefing for the next day.

This unique experience combines the exploration of cruising with the exhilaration of skiing and enables you to offer something a little different to your customers. Many cruise lines are competing against each other to offer experiences that offer the most appeal to millennial cruisers and Hurtigruten has certainly discovered a gap in the market.
