Cunard announces details of new ship

Since the retirement of the retirement of the iconic and prestigious Queen Elizabeth 2, which recently marked its 50th anniversary, Cunard’s three luxurious queens have offered passengers a luxurious and traditional way to see the world. For the past seven years, these three ships have represented a pinnacle of British cruising, striving to ensure standards and legacy are maintained on the seas.

This principle is difficult to create in the 21st century, but it is something that Cunard will be looking to ensure is upheld on board their new ship when it launches in 2022. In details announced earlier this week, the line confirmed that it will be adding a new fourth addition to its fleet which, upon launch, will be the first new addition in 12 years.

It will also be the first time since 1998 that more than three vessels have sailed for the line, with the new build being the 249th ship to fly the Cunard flag. She will cater for a capacity of 3,000 passengers and weigh in at 113,000 gross tonnes. No further details of the interior design of the ship have been confirmed at this time, but it is clear that Cunard is looking to grow across international markets.

Cunard’s Senior Vice President, Simon Palethorpe, said: “We have only recently marked the 50th anniversary of one of Cunard’s much-loved ocean liners, the legendary QE2.”

“What better way to celebrate her important role in Cunard’s past than by announcing our commitment to Cunard’s future with the commissioning of a new ship. Cunard offers unrivalled luxury ocean experiences and the new ship firmly underpins our plans to continue our growth across international markets.”

With more than 175 years of history, the line was built on the necessity for international trade and travel and, today, Cunard is the only line to operate a continuous service across the Atlantic. It is also the only line to provide the unique opportunity to bring your pet dog or cat with you on your travels, with a range of comfortable kennels for them to enjoy.

News of Cunard’s new vessel comes just two weeks after ultra-luxury line, Silversea, confirmed they would be looking to bolster their fleet with the addition of Silver Moon, which is due to launch in 2020. With many of the major luxury lines looking to add to their fleets – not to mention Virgin Cruises and Ritz-Carlton, which have both announced plans to enter the cruise sector – it is clear this is currently one of the fastest growing markets in the industry.
