As more and more holidaymakers become enticed by the world of cruising, the industry continues to respond with the introduction of new vessels that offer state-of-the-art features and contemporary features. 2017 has been no exception, with the introduction of a number of new ships across various sectors including MSC Cruises’ MSC Meraviglia, Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Joy.
2018 looks set to be another fantastic year for the cruise industry, with a number of lines set to launch new ships. This week, we have outlined five of the most eagerly anticipated new builds that are set to launch in the new year and what we might be able to expect from each of them.
Following on from the impressive Harmony of the Seas, April 2018 will see Royal Caribbean unveil their fourth Oasis-class vessel to the public. At 230,000 gross tonnes, she will become the largest cruise ship in the world – which means she will have plenty more room in which to store exciting new features. Features from sister ships including the Ultimate Abyss slide, water slides and surfing simulators will all be present on board Symphony of the Seas along with new additions including a laser tag arena, Lego climbing wall, 3D cinema room and the Sugar Beach sweet and ice cream shop.
Norwegian Cruise Line has led the way in terms of innovation over the last couple of years, with one of the most exciting concepts coming in the form of an on board go-kart track. This debuted onboard Norwegian Joy, which launched earlier this year, and will feature onboard their new build, Norwegian Bliss. Also launching in April 2018, the ship will become the third addition to the fleet’s Breakaway-Plus class and will offer an Aqua Park, Laser Tag arena and an array of delectable new dining venues including the Q Texas Smokehouse.
Following on from the success of MSC Cruises’ MSC Meraviglia, the line is also planning on unveiling a second ship before the end of 2017. MSC Seaside will mark the beginning of MSC Cruises’ Seaside class and will be the first of two identical vessels. The second of these, MSC Seaview, is scheduled to launch in May 2018 and will offer features an exclusive area known as the Yacht Club, and the longest zip wire at sea. There will also be a total of nine dining venues on board including two Asian-themed surcharge restaurants in partnership with Roy Yamaguchi.
Following in the footsteps of Holland America’s newest addition, Koningsdam, the 2,650 passenger Nieuw Statendam will become not only the second Pinnacle Class vessel but also the line’s largest ship to date. An array of new dining venues and entertainment lounges will lead you on a totally immersive experience that is distinctively unique to any other cruise ship. The world stage offers the chance to experience the world from the comfort of the ship, with a series of large screens that complement guest speakers. Passengers will also be able to enjoy hands-on experiences in America’s Test Kitchen and wine-blending classes at BLEND by Chateau Ste.
Possibly one of the most eagerly-anticipated ships of 2018 comes in December with the launch of Celebrity Edge. Much hype has surrounded the development of this vessel, with virtual renderings revealing staterooms with infinite balconies, a rooftop garden, and a ‘Magic Carpet’ moveable deck positioned off the side of the ship. The general feel and environment of the ship is unlike anything ever seen before and this can be largely attributed to the input of BBC’s Dragon’s Den star and renowned interior designer, Kelly Hoppen. Virtual reality has even been used in the design process, ensuring every individual area of the ship has been accounted for. It could even be said that this vessel could be significant in marking the beginning of a shift towards millennial cruising.
