Following the success of the Norwegian Cruise Lines’ first Breakaway-Plus Class ship, Norwegian Escape, which launched in October 2015, the line has been busy at work crafting the innovative features of the classes’ second ship. Norwegian Escape offered colourful water slides, an exhilarating high ropes course and a vast array of sumptuous restaurants and bars. Norwegian Joy will follow the same exciting path, with many elements which have never been seen on a cruise ship before.
The 3,850-capacity ship, which has been under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, is set to become the fourth-biggest ship in the world. She will sail along the Ems River before sailing towards China, on the 27th April. Along the route, the vessel will be showcased in the ports of Qingdao, Shenzhen and Hong Kong before homeporting in Shanghai and Tianjin on 27th June. This is a huge boost for the cruising market in China and indicates the industry’s intention to attract a new audience by using the most impressive vessels.
And Norwegian Joy is certainly an impressive ship. It has been known for a while that Norwegian Joy will feature a two-deck karting race track on the higher decks of the ship, but it was confirmed, this month, that the track will also be branded by Ferrari. Up to ten electric karts can be raced around the track at any one time, with each kart able to reach top speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Racers will also have their photo taken at the finishing line, with the option to share them online.
In addition to this, the ship will also feature an interactive venue known as the Galaxy Pavilion. This is also unlike anything else seen in the cruise industry thus far, with hovercraft bumper cars, video walls, virtual reality experiences and simulator rides that will amaze and excite guests of all ages. Contrastingly, if guests are seeking a sense of serenity, they will be able to enjoy the comfort of the on board park, which features plenty of greenery and a relaxing pool. This will be the perfect place to soak up the sun, but could also be used for yoga and tai chi classes.
Although Norwegian Cruise Line is clearly trying to make a statement with the new and exciting features, she will also have elements which have become synonymous with the line in recent years. Two swirling water slides that feature transparent tubes and extend over the side of the ship will feature on the top deck, while the luxurious area known as ‘The Haven by Norwegian’ will return, offering guests a heightened level of concierge and luxury. Norwegian Joy will also benefit from providing guests with the largest shopping district of the fleet, complete with duty-free stores and world-renowned brands.
With two more Breakaway-Plus class ships set to launch in 2018 and 2019 respectively, and with a further four ships set to launch over the next eight years, it hopefully won’t be too long before an NCL ship of this exciting calibre arrives in UK shores. The line is dedicated to offering cruising experiences and ships that appeal to multi-generational families and young couples.
