While 2017 may be a quiet year for Royal Caribbean in terms of new ship launches, the line has been busy building the newest acquisitions to the fleet. At the STX France shipbuilding yard in St. Nazaire, France, the largest cruise ship in the world is currently being constructed. The 230,000-ton Symphony of the Seas will become the fourth addition to the Oasis-class fleet, joining sister ships Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas. She will be 3,000 tonnes larger than the current record-holder, Harmony of the Seas, which weighs in at 226,963 tonnes. Furthermore, she will become the 25th addition to the overall Royal Caribbean fleet.
With a capacity for 5,494 guests, the ship will provide a multitude of contemporary facilities and amenities that have proven popular on board other ships. Popular areas from other Royal Caribbean vessels including the Royal Promenade, Entertainment Place, The Boardwalk, Pool and Sports Zone, Youth Zone, Central Park and Spa and Fitness areas are all beginning to take place prior to her scheduled launch date of 21st April 2018. Symphony of the Seas will also enjoy additions such as Ultimate Abyss slides, robotic bartenders, mini golf and surfing simulators.

Although many popular amenities are making a return on board Symphony of the Seas, it has been promised that the new build will offer a range of new features and additional staterooms. One of which will offer passengers a “new scale of daring” – according to Royal Executives in Orlando Weekly. No further details have been released at this time but, with the ship beginning to take shape; it shouldn’t be too long before we find out more.
Construction appears to be well on schedule, with the new build enjoying a float out from the dry dock last month. It goes without saying that this is a significant milestone with regards to the basic exterior construction and the coming months will see the interior areas completed.
Upon launch, Symphony of the Seas will operate a series of itineraries within the Mediterranean before being repositioned in Miami, where she will operate Caribbean sailings. During her Mediterranean season, she will be joined by seven other Royal Caribbean vessels sailing within the European continent – including Southampton-based Independence of the Seas and Navigator of the Seas. Vision of the Seas will operate out of Barcelona, Rhapsody of the Seas out of Venice, Jewel of the Seas out of Rome, Serenade of the Seas out of Copenhagen and Brilliance of the Seas out of Amsterdam.
