Almost exactly this time last year, we blogged about the introduction of Viking Ocean Cruises and their introductory vessel, Viking Star. This move followed an extensive period of success within the river cruising industry, with more than 50 vessels sailing along rivers around the world.
Viking Star promised a range of exciting features, unique design, and comfortable staterooms, and it hasn’t failed in delivering all of these and much more. Popular features include a range of comfortable lounges, dining rooms, an inviting spa, infinity pool, and the iconic snow grotto. And it’s fair to say, this ship has been a roaring success with passengers since its arrival. It was awarded as the ‘Best New Small Ship’ for 2016 in Cruise Critic’s UK Cruisers’ Choice awards and given a 5-star rating by Cruise Critic editors.
The 930-passenger ship has shown that it is possible to take positive factors from the world of river cruising - such as complimentary wine and beer at lunch and dinner, unlimited free Wi-Fi on board, and the fact the minimum age for sailing is 16 – and implement them in ocean cruising.
Scheduled to be christened in May 2016, Viking Sea will become the second vessel to join the Viking Ocean Cruises fleet. Mixing on board elegance with modern design, the 930-passenger Viking Sea will offer many of the popular features seen onboard her sister ship.
At 48,000 tons, Viking Sea is much smaller than the larger vessels of major cruise lines and will, therefore, enable her to visit unique ports of call. Her maiden cruises will be within Europe, sailing around the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. She is set to greet British cruisers upon arriving into the cruise terminal in Greenwich later this month.
Viking Ocean Cruises have certainly gone the extra mile in terms of ensuring this wonderful ship can offer as much as possible to each passenger. One factor to bear in mind is the size of the cabins, of which even the smallest is 224 square feet – which is fairly large for cruise ship accommodation. Additionally, each cabin will feature a balcony, king-sized beds, flat-screen TV, high-end toiletries, hair dryers and 24-hour room service.
For those who don’t already know, both Viking Star and Viking Sea will be joined by a third vessel in 2017. Viking Sky will become the third member of the fleet and is set to commence Mediterranean sailings from April.
Earlier this month, however, it was also announced that the Viking Ocean Cruises fleet will be increased to a total of six vessels by 2020. As well as Viking Sky, 2017 will also see the introduction of Viking Sun, whilst another two vessels will join the fleet in 2018 and 2020 respectively.
Viking Ocean Cruises vessels have previously sailed to an array of stunning destinations across Europe and North America, but the fourth vessel, Viking Sun, is scheduled into new pastures. Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal will become the first Australian destination to feature on Viking Ocean Cruises itineraries. The new vessel will dock overnight at the terminal on 12th January 2018 and will also dock overnight in Point Piper Buoy on 10th February 2018.
