What is a Franchise?

What do McDonalds, Avis Rent-a-Car, Pizza Hut, Radisson Hotels and Supercuts hairdressers all have in common? They are all franchise businesses - possibly some of the most famous franchises found here in the UK. But retail businesses such as these are not the only type of franchise operation that budding business owners can join. Businesses operating in the services industry, including accounting, tourism, marketing and the trades are also extremely viable franchise opportunities.

But what specifically is a franchise?

A franchise is a licensing agreement between a company and an individual that grants permission for distribution of goods or services. The company (known as the 'franchisor') provides assistance and support to the third party individual (known as the 'franchisee') as well as a range of services that ensure they are able to provide the same quality product under the company’s trademark and trade name. The GoCruise & Travel Franchise opportunity enables you to sell a range of different cruise and travel products and services to customers under the 'GoCruise & Travel' name.

One of the most important aspects of operating a franchise business is the relationship between the franchisor and the franchisee. We will provide extensive training at our head office in Ipswich and ensure you have all the tools necessary in order to succeed. In addition to this, our support team are only ever a phone call away and can provide assistance in fields such as marketing, e-commerce and booking administration.

How does franchising work?

Typically a franchisor will charge an initial joining fee in order for you to join the franchise. In the case of GoCruise & Travel, this fee will include the licensing you require in order to start selling holidays and cruises and will include full set up in terms of systems, stationary, training, website and marketing collateral. As a franchisee, you would then pay a modest monthly retainer to cover your ongoing support from the franchisor, including marketing support, full administration services and training.

GoCruise & Travel operates within a 'territorial' basis, meaning that you are buying into a UK territory. This is typically within your home region, however many franchisees operate in towns and cities outside their local area. For every cruise booked, you will earn a rate of commission, split between yourself and the franchisor.

Our relationships with renowned cruise lines will ensure that you earn competitive rates of commission for every booking secured. In fact, at GoCruise & Travel, we are privileged to earn some of the best rates of commission within the industry. With so many new and exciting vessels being introduced to the cruising industry each year, there has certainly never been a better time to consider running your own business with the GoCruise & Travel Franchise.

Why buy a franchise and what benefits are there?

Starting your own business from scratch can be challenging, often with complex rules and regulations compounded with perceived financial investment that proves too much for aspiring business owners to risk. This is where franchising really comes into its own as a more secure way to start a business. Offering a proven business format, along with ongoing support, a franchise can accelerate your success as a new business owner. Operating under the brand already established by the franchisor, a brand that has been developed and proven in the marketplace, gives your business an immediate head start. The ongoing support received is perhaps the most beneficial advantage of buying a franchise - advice from the franchisor on what does and doesn’t work, their knowledge of the industry and the systems that are made available to you are invaluable.

Whilst you will benefit from an established brand and ongoing support from your franchise family, it is worth noting that once you join a franchise, it is your business and you are free to operate it as you wish, within the guidelines set by your franchisor. Running a business is hard work and ultimately you will get out what you put in, so it’s important to make the most out of all the insight and support you are offered.

If you enjoy cruising and travelling, we can offer a fantastic and unique opportunity to start a new career in an exciting industry. There are many benefits to look forward to when it comes to buying a franchise, but there are also many challenges along the way. You will need to have good business acumen and be committed to establishing new customers. If your customer has a good experience, they are likely to tell their friends and family which will ensure your business continues to grow.

We have established a proven business format that has helped more than 60 franchisees become successful through the GoCruise & Travel Franchise.  Additionally, we are a recognised member of the British Franchising Association (BFA), which assesses and accredits franchising companies based on extensive criteria. With the backing of our parent company, Fred. Olsen Travel, the GoCruise & Travel Franchise is a respectable business opportunity within the cruising industry.
